Los Angeles, September 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Driven by sharp growth in personal and family private foundations in both China and the United States, major charitable giving by Chinese and Chinese-American donors is expanding rapidly in both countries.
From 2008 to 2014, major gifts from Chinese Americans grew nearly fivefold to almost US$500 million. At the same time, the number of Chinese-American foundations rose to nearly 1,300, an increase of 418% from 2000 to 2014.
According to statistics from the China Foundation Center, charitable giving in China reached US$16.7 billion in 2014, while the number of registered charitable foundations reached 5,545, a 430% increase from 2006 to 2016.
These and other trends are reflected in the study released today, Chinese and Chinese-American Philanthropy. The study is the first academic research project to examine the scale, motivations and impact of giving by Chinese and Chinese-American donors in the United States and China.
"The significant contributions of Chinese and Chinese-American philanthropists are having a major positive impact, expanding access to higher education, advancing innovation in health research and science, and supporting arts and culture," said Stewart Kwoh, chair of the executive committee of the Global Chinese Philanthropy Initiative. The initiative was launched through cooperation among the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, the Long U.S.-China Institute at the University of California, Irvine, and Asian Americans Advancing Justice Los Angeles.
The study examined giving patterns among Chinese Americans and Chinese communities in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao. It analyzed giving trends, motivations and impact among more than 60 philanthropists who each donated at least US$1 million per year on average between 2008 and 2014. The full research report and an online database of participating philanthropists are available at www.globalchinesephilanthropy.org.
The goal of GCPI is to improve U.S.-China relations by encouraging dialogue and cooperation among philanthropists in both countries, deepen understanding of charitable giving in the United States and Greater China through academic research, cultivate a philanthropic spirit among the next generation of Chinese and Chinese-American leaders in the public and private sectors, and raise the visibility of Chinese Americans and people of Chinese descent as positive contributors in the United States and Greater China.
"We believe that mutual understanding and interaction between Chinese philanthropists, Chinese-American philanthropists and other American philanthropists can promote positive exchange of best practices and cooperation on issues of common concern," said John Long. "This is the first step in what we hope will be a five-year effort to understand Chinese philanthropy more broadly and raise its visibility and influence worldwide."
The study found that from 2008 to 2014, major gifts by philanthropists of Chinese descent accounted for 1.2% of all major charitable giving in the United States, roughly matching the share of people of Chinese descent in the U.S. population.
Other findings include:
- The surge in Chinese-American foundations is a recent phenomenon, with more than 80% of the foundations established after 2000.
- Four Chinese-American foundations, Cyrus Tang, JT Tai & Co., Chan Soon-Shiong and Clarence TC Ching, each have more than US$100 million in assets.
- Over the past decade, the number of private foundations in China increased tenfold, reaching 3,980 in 2016.
- In 2014, the Lao Niu Foundation was the largest donor among all private foundations in China, with total giving of more than US$30 million.
In addition to identifying specific philanthropists, the study sought to understand through interviews and research what motivates their giving, how philanthropy can be encouraged and strengthened, and what obstacles and challenges remain.
The study also offers recommendations to promote mutual understanding among philanthropists, community organizations, nonprofit leaders and policymakers.
The findings will be released through a series of major conferences in cities across the United States and Greater China. The first conference was held today at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. Similar events will take place in the coming months in Hong Kong, New York, Beijing and other major cities in the United States and Greater China.
